About Bumi

I'm Aarthy, and I started Bumi to celebrate and encourage the qualities that I learned as a Tamil girl in a culture full of rich history, sustainability, and consideration for one's community and routines.

I grew up going to India every year, spending the summers in my family's village, and learning/seeing the importance of how intentional and sustainable we are with our belongings, whether it's banana leaves for plates or a hefty clay pot for meen kozhambu (the yummiest fish stew). Everything felt close to the Earth and its elements: clay, leaves, wood, plants. I saw these pieces year after year with wear-and-tear only from how loved these pieces were as they fed the community and more.

They made me feel connected to my big family, my well-fed community, the Earthly elements that I was embracing every day. They made me feel connected to the only things that seem to stand the test of time.

My goal (and purpose, frankly) is to pass this ideology along with any and everybody around me. My family has lived generations celebrating how intentional our possessions are, and it is only my job to do the same.

I hope to build pieces that you will not only use as part of your morning or evening routines but also pass on to your families and friends as a token of sustained love.
